Water Catchment

Trees, shrubs and perennials passively irrigated by pumice wicksHere in the arid southwest, water is one of our most precious resources. Unfortunately, it is often approached as an afterthought or as a nuisance: how to get the water to run off the property, how to get the canale water to stop splashing against the adobe wall or how to stop the water from eroding the adjacent slope.

At Down to Earth, water is where we begin: How can we utilize the existing sources of water (precipitation, roof runoff, sheet runoff) to irrigate our edible and ornamental gardens?

There are many catchment systems to choose from, including cisterns and pumice wicks. These photos show pumice wicks being constructed so that, once in place, plants are being passively watered at the root zone.
